Topicality and Risk in Next Playwrights Horizons Season

Playwrights Horizons, among the most adventurous theaters Off Broadway, will present six shows in its 2018-19 season — the first of which will be delivered by two casts, one performing in American Sign Language alongside the other.

The opening play, “I Was Most Alive With You,” by Craig Lucas, follows a recovering addict, who is deaf, and his family as they deal with the aftermath of an accident. Lois Smith, Lisa Emery and Russell Harvard (a partially deaf actor best known for television’s “Fargo”) are in the ensemble.

The play, which had its debut at the Huntington Theater Company in 2016, is presented with the support of the Roy Cockrum Foundation. Mr. Cockrum is a former monk who won a $259 million Powerball jackpot in 2014. His foundation is dedicated to helping produce ambitious work that is costly to stage.

While Mr. Lucas has been widely produced, other writers in the theater’s season are getting major New York productions for the first time.
